AI Voice vs. a Human Voice Actor: Which Should Your Business Use?

Use an AI voice for internal drafts, rough cuts and content that changes every week. Hire a human voice actor when the audio represents your brand to customers, needs to persuade, or has to hold attention for more than a minute. I'm Jason McCoy, a professional voice actor with more than 20 years of experience, and I'll be straight with you about where each one fits.

Are AI voices good enough for business videos now?

For some jobs, yes. Text-to-speech has improved a lot, and for a scratch track, an internal update or a quick social test, it's fast and cheap. The gap shows up when the voice has to sound like it means what it's saying. AI reads words; a voice actor reads intent. Listeners notice the difference within a few seconds, even when they can't name it.

When is an AI voice the right choice?

  • Scratch tracks to time an edit before the final voice is recorded
  • Internal-only content like a quick team update nobody outside will hear
  • High-volume, low-stakes content that changes daily and is thrown away
  • Testing a script to hear how it flows before you commit

When should you hire a human voice actor instead?

  • Commercials and ads, where the read has to persuade and sell
  • Brand and "about us" videos, where trust is the whole point
  • Training and e-learning, where people must stay focused for many minutes
  • Phone greetings and on-hold messages, often the first voice a customer hears
  • Anything with local names, product terms or acronyms that AI tends to mispronounce

Why does an AI voiceover sound "off" even when every word is right?

It's usually emphasis and pacing. People stress the one word that carries the meaning and pause before the important part. AI spreads stress evenly, rushes or drags in odd places, and keeps the same energy from first line to last. The result is technically correct but flat, and flat audio makes viewers trust the video less.

Can audiences tell when a voice is AI?

Many can, and more are learning to. Once someone notices, they often assume the company cut corners elsewhere too. For a customer-facing message, that's a risk most businesses don't want to take on their brand.

The video below is about AI, but the voice is 100% human. That's me, recorded in my studio, with no AI voice involved. Listen for how the emphasis and pacing follow the meaning of each line.

Is there a middle ground?

Yes. Many clients use AI for drafts and internal versions, then hire me for the final, public version once the script is locked. You get fast iteration while you're editing, and a polished, human read for what customers actually hear. If you're budgeting for that final version, here's how much a professional voice actor costs and what drives the price.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is a human voice actor much slower than AI?

Not by much in practice. Most of my scripts are delivered within one business day, and short projects often the same day.

Can you match a script we already timed with an AI voice?

Yes. Send the AI version as a reference and I'll match the timing so your edit still fits.

Do you use AI to create your voice?

No. Every recording is my real voice, recorded in my studio.

How do I know if my project needs a human voice?

Ask yourself whether a customer will hear it. If yes, send me the script for a free audition and compare it to your AI version.

Hear the difference for yourself

Send me your script, even one you've already run through an AI voice. I'll record a free custom audition so you can compare them side by side.
